#30DayMapChallenge Explained
A global community movement held every November celebrating open spatial data, remote sensing analytics, and expressive cartographic design.
1. Origins & Global Movement
Initiated in 2019 by Finnish GIS expert Topi Tjukanov, #30DayMapChallenge has become the premier global social mapping initiative. Every November, thousands of geographers, cartographers, data scientists, and spatial enthusiasts create and share one map per day based on 30 pre-announced daily prompts.
2. Freedom of Tools & Open Spirit
There are no judges, no fees, and no restrictions on tools. You can make maps with QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, Python, R, Blender 3D, Mapbox, or traditional pen and paper. The core objective is sharing knowledge, testing open spatial data sets, and enriching the international mapping culture.
3. geofurkan: Scientific Rigor & Aesthetics
Prepared by Furkan Davut DEMİR (@geofurkan), each entry marries GIS satellite analytics with editorial cartographic styling. Every map is provided as a publication-ready cartographic visual, complete with context, design approaches, and transparent data sources.
4. Technology Stack & Open Data
Built using ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, Python (GeoPandas, Rasterio), and Blender 3D. Powered strictly by verified open datasets including ESA Copernicus Sentinel-1/2, USGS/NASA Landsat & SRTM, MTA Active Faults, AFAD Earthquake Catalogs, and OpenStreetMap.
